What does the term "Petrol Head" actually mean

Several people haven't heard the term "Petrol Head" and have asked me what it actually means. Usually they have found the term in some text and are having troubles translating it. The literal translation I guess is "Someone who's head is full of petrol related thoughts" ("petrol" is the what the Americans call "gas") I'd translate it to a "motor sport enthusiast".
